What is NMR spectroscopy?

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy reveals the chemical environments of atomic nuclei. Hydrogen (¹H) and carbon (¹³C), for example, can help us understand how a molecule is built.

When is a measurement useful?

Suppose you want to know whether a reaction produced the expected compound. You can compare the measured signals with those expected for its structure. Additional signals may indicate residual starting material, solvent or a by-product.

How does a spectrum form?

The spectrometer places the sample in a strong magnetic field. A short radiofrequency pulse excites the selected nuclei. A coil detects their response, and a computer converts this signal into a spectrum. The position of a peak reflects the local chemical environment. In a ¹H spectrum, peak areas measured under suitable conditions give the relative numbers of hydrogen nuclei contributing to each signal.

These two measurements of Xenoprotide A show the same sample from different perspectives. The one-dimensional spectrum shows proton signals. In the HMBC spectrum, cross-peaks indicate longer-range couplings between protons and carbon nuclei.

03 / THE PROCESS

What to expect at each step

From your sample
to your results.

Before the measurement, we discuss your objectives and agree on the requirements.

  1. 01

    Tell us your question

Describe your sample and what you hope to learn. You can also ask us for help choosing a method.

  2. 02

    Agree on the scope

We discuss feasibility, measurements, sample requirements, cost and timing.

  3. 03

    Carry out the analysis

Once you place an order, the agreed measurements are carried out.

  4. 04

Go to enquiry
Which NMR measurements can I request?

We offer ¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P and ¹⁹F NMR at 400 and 700 MHz. Frequencies refer to the nominal ¹H frequency. Select one or more nuclei. Interpretation, quantification and 2D NMR are available on request.

Which solvents are available?

Options include D₂O, CDCl₃, CDCl₃ with TMS, acetonitrile-d3 (MeCN-d3 / CD₃CN) and benzene-d6 (C₆D₆). We discuss suitability before measurement. You can also leave the solvent choice open.

How much sample is required?

The quantity depends on the sample, solubility, method and question. We will agree on quantity and preparation with you. Please contact us before shipping.

How much does an analysis cost and how long will it take?

Tell us about your sample and the analysis you need. Before you place an order, we provide a quote covering the measurements, total cost and expected timing.

In which format will I receive my results?

We agree on the data format and any interpretation beforehand. Tell us which files or plots you need when submitting your enquiry.

Can I request other analyses?

Yes. Describe your question or preferred method. We will check feasibility and agree on the next steps with you.
